The agricultural sector of Contramaestre municipality aims to plant a total of 18,416.9 hectares (ha), growing by 6,351.42 hectares more than the previous year, in an attempt to have a profitable cold season.
Among them, 3 thousand 413.3 hectares are destined to the sowing of viands, 3 thousand 402.2 hectares to vegetables and 8044 hectares of grains.
In order to comply with these production plans, the companies Agropecuarias de Laguna Blanca, Agroindustrial América Libre and Procesadora de Café Rolando Ayub, together with the production bases associated with them, are responsible for complying with the planting parameters established in the corresponding periods.
Among the plantations that are expected to be harvested during the current season are cassava, sweet potatoes, taro, yams, vegetables, grains and fruits.
Key elements for the cold season
In Contramaestre, eight key elements were taken into account for the 2023-2024 cold season, such as: nematode testing of all seedbeds, which are already located and certified, the evaluation and certification of the machines participating in the campaign, the preparation of a planting program where producers were selected to guarantee the plantings that will yield crops by the end of the year and the first quarter of 2024. The definition of the areas for seed and farms to guarantee the reproduction of the necessary seed, the contracting by products, producers and agricultural structures. The necessary inputs that may be available and possible solutions as well as actions for the recovery of pumping in the Laguna Blanca Agricultural Company.
In this way, the municipality intends to harvest an average of more than 17,800 ha. Despite the current economic situation that limits the acquisition of agricultural inputs necessary to guarantee such yields, the territory of Santiago continues to focus on fulfilling this essential task for the sovereignty and food security of the population.
