Nurse work is part of the health sciences and encompasses the care of people of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or not, and in all circumstances to ensure their quality of life.
It is impossible to think of human life and health without the care of a nursing professional. They are always at the forefront of any situation that involves a struggle for life, whether it is the birth of a baby, the care of the sick or injured, the terminal condition of a person, and even in preventive health tasks.
The nursing personnel in Contramaestre, a municipality in eastern Cuba, is recognized for its scientific and technical preparation and its dedication to work both in primary health care and in hospitals, in health promotion and prevention campaigns or in international work.
A nurse of compassion
Among this army of white coats in Contramaestre stands out the ¨seño¨ (Miss), as her colleagues affectionately call her, Lic. Belquis Ignes, who demonstrates her compassion and professionalism every day.
What does it mean to be a nurse these days?
“To be a nurse these days means to be doubly consecrated; it is to fulfill better than ever the commitment to the Homeland, to the health of the people, to the Ministry of Public Health, to the Cuban Revolution.”
How do you deal with the shortage of medicines?
Today, treating with kindness, with a full smile, is saving lives…because if we don’t have the painkiller, at least we have love and affection…and sometimes the good treatment can replace the medicine. And always giving the hope that today there is no medicine but tomorrow there will be.
In a general sense, how do you see the development of your profession today?
“Today more than ever the country needs a nurse better prepared for emergencies that may arise inside or outside the country. We already have the experience in both directions.”
The role played by Contramaestre nurses in tackling a wide range of health challenges is commendable.
