Peasant traditions back in Contramaestre

Peasant traditions back in Contramaestre

The members of the Miguel Betancourt Credit and Service Cooperative (CSS) arrive early as the typical dishes of the Creole cuisine, wearing their characteristic attire, one of their traditions, and bringing the contagious joy of a meeting that this time is not in the furrow.

Among the cultural traditions typical of the Cuban countryside stand out those such as dancing, the “décima”, music; but also the traditional games that usually occupy the free time of those who work the land.

Reviving traditions

The competitive spirit of fishermen, roosters and cooks is awakened. The exciting ribbon races are the delight of a show that returns to these grounds, after years of sanitary limitations, including food exhibitions that once harvested in the field, are prepared with the culinary wisdom that has passed from generation to generation.

As a colophon, the election of the Flor de Birama (selection of the the most beautiful peasant woman), one of the traditions that accompanies the Cubans since the 60’s of the last century, and that this time in the CSS Miguel Betancourt in Contramaestre, obtained a historical draw.

It was a day of celebration, of recognition to the most outstanding, an invitation to revive the peasant traditions in times of cell phones and Internet connection, because that is precisely what it is about, to allow the most authentic of our fields, to dissolve in the battle of the globalized world in which we live.
