The discussion of the preliminary draft of the Code of Children, Adolescents and Youths was part of the activities developed throughout Cuba to celebrate the anniversaries of the José Martí Pioneers Organization (OPJM) and the Young Communist League (UJC). At the Antonio Santiago García Pre-University Institute, in the municipality of Contramaestre, the debate was held in the presence of tenth and eleventh grade students and teachers.
Edilson Valdés González, deputy director of the educational center, announced that during the activity the opinions and concerns of the students were collected, both in a particular and general way, and stressed the importance of this exchange for the awareness of the youngest students.
The approach of the students to this new bill ensures their active participation in a process in which they are protagonists, since it is about the regulation of their rights, duties and guarantees. In this sense, José Antonio Estrada Brizuela and Gabriela Aidar Anaya, who are in the eleventh grade at the institution, commented that it is a comprehensive and beneficial project, especially with regard to the family.
The preliminary draft of the Code for Children, Adolescents and Young People includes the rights of these age groups in matters as diverse as physical integrity, study and recreation. It also offers a series of duties intended to encourage a sense of responsibility and a correct civic attitude from an early age.
Guaranteeing the well-being of children, adolescents and young people is a priority for the Cuban state and government. The new legal provisions for the full exercise of their rights are a step forward in the construction of a fairer and safer society for the new generations.
