Cuba celebrates the Intarnational Day of Childhood

The International Day of Childhood and Cuba

Cuba has privilege to celebrate the International Day of Childhood, since children are a priority for the Cuban state in all areas. Cuba’s approach to children’s care is characterized by a strong commitment to education, healthcare, and social support, resulting in positive outcomes for children.

The State prioritizes the integral development of early childhood with education and health programs such as the Maternal and Child Care Program, the “Educate your child” program and care in children’s circles.

Education in Cuba is free and compulsory for children from ages six to 15. The government ensures that all children have access to quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background.

Early childhood programs focus on the holistic development of children, including cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth. Activities are designed to stimulate creativity, critical thinking, and social skills.

The Cuban education has a holistic approach, which emphasizes a well-rounded curriculum that includes subjects such as mathematics, science, literature, history, and the arts. There is also a focus on physical education and moral education, promoting values such as solidarity and social responsibility.

As to nutrition and healthcare Services is concerned the children are provided with health services for children, including regular check-ups, vaccinations, and nutritional support. This ensures that children are healthy and ready to learn; and the government implements nutrition programs aimed at ensuring that children receive adequate and balanced meals, particularly in schools. This is crucial for their physical and cognitive development.

The program “Por un mundo al derecho” (For a world of rights), led by the Ministry of Justice and made up of several institutions and organizations, has promoted a culture of rights.  Studies show a gradual increase in knowledge of national legislation and the CRC, as well as opportunities to strengthen the meaningful participation of children and adolescents in matters that concern them.

However, the Cuban Education could do much more, the growing but limited access to information and communication technologies, and educational materials and equipment, due to the US blockade on Cuba.
