Solid waste collection in Maffo: a problem with no solution

In the town of Maffo, mountains of solid waste are part of the urban landscape, where solid waste accumulates in full view of all its inhabitants, without proper control and without concern for the existing problem.

This reality has contributed to the appearance of micro-dumps in neighborhood communities and in public spaces, where the waste blurs the view of residents of the district and some visitors.

Dumping debris, accumulating grass and household waste on any downtown or neighborhood corner, without respecting symbols or social institutions, has become as common a custom as sanitizing our homes or workplaces.

Following the trail of solid waste and its daily proliferation in Maffo, we know that the availability of means for its collection is insufficient, since the cart drivers of the Communal Services sector, currently in decline, have retired for reasons of salary, which does not fit the difficult task.

The situation is also associated with the lack of resources, fuel, batteries and tires, among other shortages, which seriously affects the activity.

It is not exempt the social indiscipline of many people, who do not respect the cleanliness in the community to make visible the unpleasant mountains in the environment, without disregarding the rodents and vectors that trigger communicable diseases by practicing a culture of environmental disrespect.

Faced with the lack of workforce, collection equipment, lack of means of protection and the indolence of a large majority, I wonder.

How long will we allow anyone to dump their household or business waste in the middle of the street, on the corner of the block or in a park, in the outdoor areas of a doctor’s office, a school or a warehouse?

Ensuring the sanitation of the community and its public spaces should be everyone’s responsibility. It is not a matter of painting, cleaning and keeping the sidewalks of the central road impeccable.

What is needed is to show the other face of hygiene, where the neighborhoods exhibit a different face, clean, organized, orderly, gaining in urban beauty and aesthetics in harmony with the environment.
