For respect for sexual diversity

Sex diversity day, June 5

Cuban society is characterized by joining wills in terms of its inclusive development, in order to facilitate and enhance equal opportunities.

And behind this intention, respect for sexual diversity is a pending issue that requires broadening the dialogue to progressively modify concepts and attitudes.

Although it is known that in matters of sexuality mentalities do not change easily, the work on respect for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender and intersex people must gain ground in defense of respect for free and responsible sexual orientation and gender identity.

The interest of justice and social equity, with the purpose of transforming conscience on the subject already exhibits an important change, since Cuba is the only country in the world where the genital readjustment operation is performed free of charge.

To date, more than 30 people have benefited from sex change surgery on the island, although on the planet transsexuality is still considered a disease.

Although the Labor Code guarantees non-discrimination based on sexual orientation, it is certain to know that Cuban society is already prepared to respect the legal union of homosexuals, gaining space in the freedom of rights for the LGBTI community and in the nation.

Undoubtedly, Cuba has advanced as an example of change for the respect of sexual diversity, however the emancipation program has been attacked by the imperialist hegemony through siege and massive disinformation campaigns.

For the time being, let’s pronounce ourselves to eliminate doubts, fears and concerns, for the sake of a country where lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and intersex people have the same legal opportunities as heterosexual people. With respect and love the battle is won.
