Iota becomes a category 5 hurricane

Havana, Nov 16 (Web editorial) – Iota became a category 5 hurricane on Monday, the most intense on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 260 kilometers per hour and a pressure of 917 hectopascals.

A potentially “deadly” hurricane surge is expected along Nicaragua’s northeastern coast, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami reported.
Flash flooding in Central America, the NHC reported on its Twitter account, which has described this atmospheric event as an “exceptionally dangerous” situation.

In a report given at 10:00 a.m., the NHC noted that Iota is expected to remain a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane as it approaches the coast of Nicaragua tonight.
