Prior to the departure of the Cuban athletes who will take part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the Provincial Bureau of the Young Communist League (UJC) in Santiago de Cuba visited the homes of the competitors selected in the province, declaring them Young Olympic House.
About seven families of the young athletes were visited, among them those of the first Cuban medalist Rafael Yuniel Alba Castillo who won the bronze medal in Taekwondo in the division of more than 80 kg, a triumph that comes in the framework of the festivities for the National Rebellion Day and the 506th anniversary of the town of Santiago.
The homes and families of Zurian Hechavarría Martén and Maikel Demetrio Massó Babastro, both classified in Athletics, Gabriel Rosillo Kindelán and Ismael Borrero Molina (Greco Wrestling), Marlín del Toro Carvajal (Judo) and Luis Enrique Zayas Fernández (Athletics Jumping) were also declared Casa Joven Olímpico.
The achievement that Rafael Alba from Santiago brings to Cuba was celebrated by Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez who on his Twitter account wrote: ‘Today we woke up with the first medal for #Cuba in the #OlympicGames2020 Thank you Rafael Alba for the joy! With you the medal standings of the Island opens and we are sure that we will enjoy many more feats of our athletes. A hug for the whole delegation’.
