The national director of Epidemiology of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, Dr. Francisco Durán, reported on Wednesday five deaths and 858 positive samples for Covid-19 during the last 24 hours, for a total of 34,922 diagnoses since the beginning of the disease in the country.
The specialist informed on TV that at the end of yesterday, 16,798 patients had been admitted, of which 3,153 were suspected, 8,702 were under epidemiological surveillance and 4,943 were confirmed.
Durán explained that the country had taken 19,710 samples the day before for a total of 2,069,418 samples analyzed.
The epidemiologist announced that, of the 858 patients, 837 have a source of infection in previously confirmed cases, 8 have a source of infection abroad (4 foreigners) and in 13 persons the source of infection is unknown. There were 850 autochthonous patients, of whom 398 were asymptomatic.
Of the total number of confirmed cases, 459 were male and 399 female. In terms of age groups, 124 patients were diagnosed under 19 years of age and 689 pediatric patients were hospitalized and active. In the 19 to 39 years age group, 274 cases were confirmed, 319 cases in the 40 to 59 years age group and 141 people over 60 years of age.
Of the 34,922 patients diagnosed with the disease since its onset, 4,943 have been confirmed as hospitalized, of whom 4,876 have a stable clinical course. A total of 249 deaths have been reported (5 on the last day) for a case fatality rate of 0.72. Two evacuees, 54 returnees and 29,674 patients have been recovered (981 discharged during the day). Thirty-one patients in critical condition and 36 patients in serious condition are reported.
As of February 9, 190 countries have reported cases of COVID-19, with 10 million 212,738 infections and 2 million 342,647 deaths, for a case fatality rate of 2.18.
In the Americas, 48 million 188 thousand 626 confirmed cases and 1 million 119 thousand 253 deaths have been reported, for a case fatality rate of 2.32.
