Tobacco growers of Contramaestre harvest the Corojo 96 variety in several plantations in this municipality of the province of Santiago de Cuba.
Osber Matos Salgado, Agronomist Engineer and deputy director of production in the Base Business Unit of Collection, Processing and Twisting of Contramaestre Tobacco said that this production corresponds to the planting of the leaf in the months of October and November 2020.At that stage, the Contramaestre tobacco growers were responsible for planting 120 hectares of the 260 hectares programmed for the province, as it is the largest producer of the crop.
In November 2020, rainfall caused by Tropical Storm ETA affected about 190 fields of postures intended for planting.
In spite of the damages, the lost crop was recovered, with the goal of harvesting 95 tons of the leaf.
Currently, the 59 producers who grow tobacco in Contramaestre are preparing to harvest with quality and efficiency so that the province of Santiago can materialize the productive and economic commitments agreed upon at the beginning of the 2020-2021 campaign.
