Raul and Diaz-Canel’s offerings as a tribute to the martyrs of La Coubre

Flower offerings from Army General Raul Castro Ruz, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, and from the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, accompanied Wednesday the tribute to the victims of the La Coubre steamboat sabotage, 60 years after that barbaric crime.

The commemoration took place in front of the La Coubre docks, in Havana harbor, right at the place where the events took place and very close to where the remains of the ship that was damaged are being erected as a monument to the martyrs of that ignominious terrorist act, and as a reminder of how high a price the Cuban people had to pay to be dignified and free.

On behalf of the bereaved and broken families, Alberto Felipe Codina Carril reiterated the demand for justice for those who, on the afternoon of March 4, 1960, perished as a result of the explosions, the wounded, mutilated and other people disabled for life, for their families and for the people of Cuba, victims of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government, the longest, most brutal, perverse and fiercest in history.

The son of Manuel Francisco Codina Hernández, Alberto Felipe is 72 years old today -one more than his father when he died- but he was an orphan at that time and if he managed to study, to fulfill his professional duties, to become a good man and to start a family, it is thanks to this Cuban Revolution, which, he said, the genocidal Empire has not and will not be able to stop.
In the closing remarks, Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, a member of the Central Committee and the first secretary of the Party in Havana, paid tribute to the victims of the sabotage against La Coubre and of the aggression against Cuba by a mortal enemy, which does not cease its efforts to take possession of this mambisa and unredeemed land, and hey persist in their dirty war.

Now it is the subversion, the cyber-attacks, the slander campaigns, but this people does not lack intelligence, will, ideals, principles and total certainty of the justice of its cause, to fight this war that – as José Martí said – is made for us by thought and that we will win by thought, he emphasized.

And as shocking as March 5, 1960, at the funeral of the victims of the monstrous attack, Fidel’s Homeland or Death! of the triumphant Revolution resounded this afternoon.

The commemorative ceremony was presided over by Omar Ruiz Martín, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee, Ana María Mari Machado, vice president of the National Assembly of People’s Power, Carlos Rafael Miranda Martínez, national coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, Reinaldo García Zapata, Governor of Havana and other leaders of political, social and mass organizations.
