Rubén Martínez Villena dies on January 16, 1934. He was one of the most important fighters against Machado dictarship. He fought against corruption, and for bringing a better and just life for the Cuba people.
His debut in public life came as a result of the historic Protest of the Thirteen. In his short existence he was always seen on the side of the light: member of the Grupo Minorista (“Minorist Group”), secretary and professor at the Popular University “José Martí”, delegate to the Cuban Section of the Anti-Imperialist League of the Americas, legal advisor to the National Workers Confederation of Cuba. He was also member of the Freedom Committee of Julio Antonio Mella, and militant and member of the Central Committee of the first Marxist-Leninist party in Cuba.
He was the soul and guide of the general strike that overthrew Machado’s tyranny, advisor of the preparatory works of the Fourth National Workers Congress of Union Unity whose closing coincides with his death.
