Díaz-Canel highlights low infant mortality in Cuba

Havana, Cuba – President Miguel Díaz-Canel notes on Twitter that Cuba closed this year with an infant mortality rate of 5.0 per 1,000 live births, a figure that places it among the best in the world.

The president points to figures provided by the Directorate of Medical Records and Statistics, according to which in 2019 almost 110,000 children were born in Cuban territory.

In this regard, the Minister of Public Health, José Ángel Portal, said that despite the difficult times Cuba went through in the year just ended, the nation shows an enormous commitment to children’s health.

Dr. Noemí Palma, Director of Medical Care at the Ministry of Public Health, said that the main causes affecting this indicator were related to complications associated with premature birth and retarded intrauterine growth.
