Fidel’s phrase presided over the main event this Thursday for the culmination of the participation of the Cuban Medical Brigade in the More Doctors for Brazil program: “No one will be able to sabotage Cuba’s cooperation with other Third World countries. Deeds and not words. Quick action and not to wait for the Greek calends when there are human beings from poor countries who are dying every day at all hours.
And it was precisely to the humanist essences of the Commander in Chief that the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, alluded when he addressed a representation of the doctors who returned to Cuba, after having honestly fulfilled their mission.
To them he said: “The return to the homeland is not the end, it is a beginning. You arrive at an important moment for Cuba, when we are about to approve the new Constitution that will be submitted to a referendum on February 24.
“You who will return to your workplaces or go on another mission are part of this people who give us proof of heroism. In the name of the Party and the Government, I would like to reiterate that we are deeply proud of each one of you, as we are of the rest of the Health collaborators who carry out their mission in 66 other countries… You are a symbol of the country that formed you and you are showing the kind of men and women we aspire to in the Cuban society, based on justice and humanism, not on the law of the most powerful”.
The ceremony took place in the Central Medical Cooperation Unit, where José Ramón Machado Ventura, Second Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba; members of the Political Bureau Roberto Morales Ojeda, vice-president of the Councils of State and Ministers; and Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Minister of Foreign Affairs; as well as José Ángel Portal Miranda, head of the Ministry of Public Health, were also present.
The collaborator Indira García Arredondo, who returned to the island after rendering her services in the state of Sao Paulo, stated in the name of her colleagues: “The ferocious campaign that we all experience is well known, the permanent invitation to bend, the carrot promised by false prophets of freedom and the democracy a thousand times trampled underfoot by themselves. But they were wrong… Our work culminated in results that not even the enemies themselves have been able to hide, we transformed health indicators and improved the quality of life of millions of Brazilians.
The ceremony recognized the organizations that ensured Cuba’s participation in the More Doctors for Brazil program and the return of Cuban doctors to the country in just 20 days: the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Transportation, Public Health, the Central Bank of Cuba, the General Customs of the Republic and the mass media.
