Havana, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today highlighted the performance of the national delegation at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the patriotic cry of boxer Julio César la Cruz.
‘Inspiring performance of our athletes, Idalys Ortiz’s silver, Alba’s bronze and Julio César la Cruz’s patriotic cry of #PatriaOMuerte in #Tokyo2021,’ wrote the president on his Twitter account.
The president underscored the gallantry of the Olympic champion in Rio de Janeiro 2016, who responded firmly to previous statements of the Cuban nationalized Spanish Enmanuel Reyes and people who from the stands shouted against Cuba.
Reyes vs La Cruz
Before the fight, Reyes predicted that he would ‘tear heads off’ and give himself a Patria y Vida, the title of a song used by enemies of the Cuban Revolution, if he won the heavyweight quarterfinal bout.
Reyes could not withstand the thrust of the captain of the national boxing team, who defeated him 4-1 to hear at the end of the bout the slogan Patria o Muerte, Venceremos! (“Homeland or Death, We Shall Overcome!”) in the Kokugikan Arena.
On the other side of the planet, with 13 hours of difference, many languages and provocations in between, what a Cuban cry of #PatriaOMuerte. Of course we will win,” said Díaz-Canel.
He also revealed that he had already spoken by phone with the three athletes and ratified Cuba’s pride in its athletes.
