The Henry Reeve Brigade of Cuban doctors was distinguished this Sunday with the 2020 Democracy Award to the outstanding Latin American personality, granted by the Caras y Caretas Cultural Center of Argentina.
The respected international contingent of Cuban doctors, specialized in disaster situations and serious epidemics, this year has taken its noble and supportive work to the areas most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
At present, 43 brigades are active in 33 countries and 2,523 professionals attend to patients who are victims of this lethal disease, spread all over the planet, with more than 40 million people infected since its appearance.
The Brigade shared the award, which recognizes those who demonstrate day by day their commitment through their lives and work with democratic values, with the Lastesis collective in Chile.
According to the organizers, other personalities were also distinguished in this 12th edition, such as the outstanding fighter Hebe de Bonafini, president of Madres de Plaza de Mayo, who received an honorary human rights award.
Parallel to other categories, every year since its foundation in 2009, the Steering Committee of the Caras y Caretas Cultural Center chooses the personalities distinguished with the Award to the Outstanding Personality of Argentina and Latin America as well as the laurels of honor.
Instituted in honor of the year in which this country recovered its democracy, after the last military dictatorship (1976-1983), the award grants a statuette designed by the prestigious goldsmith Marcelo Toledo.
