Moscow, May 21 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel today expressed the willingness of the Antillean nation to support the member states of the E Economic Union (EEU) in the fight against Covid-19.

”We express our readiness to establish effective cooperation with the EEU member states based on the exchange of experiences among experts of our countries,” the Cuban leader said at the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.

He said that the country is also ready to begin the process of insertion into the common market of medicines, devices and medical technology, the creation of which is endorsed in the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty.

In his speech, he highlighted that the vaccine candidates of the Finlay Vaccine Institute and the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology have proven to be effective against the new strains of the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus detected worldwide.

He noted that Phase III clinical trials with the Soberana 02 and Abdala vaccines are proceeding smoothly. It has been demonstrated that the levels of antibodies they generate are at the same level or higher than those of other candidates,’ he stressed.

Díaz-Canel warned that in this way, Cuba has the capacity to produce a large amount of vaccines, so it plans to become one of the first countries to immunize its entire population.

The Cuban president explained that such encouraging results have been obtained despite the U.S. blockade and the intensification of its genocidal policy against the island in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cuba goes ahead despite US blockade

He assured that despite the U.S. persecution, Cuba has resisted the pandemic due to the determination of the people and its government, elected by the majority, whose essence, he said, is a social policy for the benefit of the population.

In this regard, Díaz-Canel underscored the existence of a high-quality, free and comprehensive health system, which ensures the interrelation among the branches of knowledge, the production of services and society.

He stressed that thanks to Cuban science, scientists, researchers and health workers, the country ensures the production of 85 percent of its medicines, while developing five vaccine candidates against Covid-19 in different stages of clinical trials and with encouraging results.
