The Cuban Ministry of Public Health website reports that as of March 21, 271,364 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in 162 countries, with 11,252 deaths and a death rate of 4.15%. The World Health Organization reports 94 countries with transmission.
In the region of the Americas, 31 countries and 10 overseas territories are affected. There have been 23,783 confirmed cases and 307 deaths.
In the isolation and care centers set up for this purpose, 954 patients have been admitted for clinical and epidemiological monitoring; 255 of them are foreigners and 727 are Cubans. Another 30,773 people are monitored in their homes, from the structured primary health care throughout the country.
THE 35 CASES REPORTED IN THE COUNTRY are
Four tourists from the Italian region of Lombardy were identified as having respiratory symptoms. They were staying at a hostel in the city of Trinidad, province of Sancti Spíritus, and had arrived at the José Martí International Airport in Havana in recent days. They were immediately admitted to the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (ipk). On 11 March 2020, the ipk’s National Reference Laboratory reported that three of the four tourists who had been isolated the day before had tested positive for the new sars coronavirus CoV-2. The evolution of the three confirmed patients is favorable and none so far is life-threatening.
A Cuban resident in Santa Clara, Villa Clara province, husband of a Bolivian citizen living in Milan, Lombardy region, Italy, who entered the country last February 24, appearing to be asymptomatic, began to develop symptoms on March 16.
A Cuban, resident in the municipality of Diez de Octubre, in Havana, was confirmed as the new case of sars CoV-2. The fifth positive patient, 63 years old, returned from Spain on March 8, appearing to be in good health, and on the 11th started with mild respiratory symptoms.
A 38-year-old Cuban citizen, resident in the province of Camagüey. He arrived in the country on March 14 of this year, from Italy.
A 65-year-old Cuban citizen, resident in the municipality of Guanabacoa, Havana province. He is the contact for his daughter, who returned from Italy on March 7 of this year and began to show symptoms on March 10.
A 25-year-old Cuban citizen, resident in the municipality of Santa Clara, Villa Clara province. He arrived in the country on March 8 of this year from Madrid, Spain.
The 67-year-old Cuban citizen, resident in the municipality of Santa Clara, Villa Clara province. She arrived in the country on March 11 of this year from New Jersey, U.S.A.
A 77-year-old U.S. citizen, who arrived in the country on March 8 of this year from California, United States. He started with symptoms last 14th, being identified by the carrier and the guide of the tourist group, with respiratory symptoms while they were in Trinidad, province of Sancti Spíritus.
In the early morning of March 18, the 61-year-old Italian patient who had been admitted to the intensive care unit of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine died in a critical condition. Despite the efforts made by the intensive care team that was directly attending him, as well as by the Minsap’s group of experts, who were permanently monitoring him, the complications that developed as a result of his illness caused his death.
A 57 year-old Canadian citizen; he arrived in the country on March 14 of this year, from Canada, on a direct flight to the city of Holguin.
A 69-year-old French citizen. He arrived in the country on March 9 of this year from Paris, France. He started with symptoms last 16th, and went that same day to the Medical Office of the Royalton Hotel, in the city of Bayamo, province of Granma.
He is a 70-year-old Italian citizen who arrived in the country on March 9 of this year from Lombardy, Italy. He was isolated at the Villa El Cocal Isolation Center in Holguín, because he was the contact for the first confirmed cases in Trinidad, coming from Italy.
Cuban citizen, 37 years old, who arrived in the country last March 14, from Rome, Italy, starting with the symptoms that same day. Ernesto Guevara went to the health area on March 17 for presenting flu symptoms. She was identified as a suspect and sent to the Villa Colibri Isolation Center in Santiago de Cuba.
34-year-old Spanish citizen, who arrived in the country on March 13 of this year from Madrid, Spain. On the 17th he went directly to the ipk, where he was admitted as a suspect.
Canadian citizen, 81 years old. He arrived in the country on March 10 of this year from Montreal, Canada. He stayed in a hostel located in the municipality of Plaza de La Revolución, province of La Habana.
25-year-old Belgian woman, who arrived in the country on 11 March with a stopover in Madrid. She stayed at a hostel in the municipality of Centro Habana, Havana province, and on 14 March moved to a hostel in the municipality of Viñales, Pinar del Río province.
Cuban citizen, 36 years old, resident in the municipality of Cárdenas, province of Matanzas. She arrived from Guyana on March 12 and began to show symptoms on March 15.
Cuban citizen, 32 years old, resident in the municipality of Guanabacoa, Havana province. He arrived in the country on March 14 of this year from France.
Cuban citizen, 76 years old, resident in the municipality of Boyeros, Havana. He arrived in the country on March 15 of this year from Madrid, Spain.
Cuban citizen, 35 years old, resides in the municipality of Palma Soriano, province of Santiago de Cuba. He arrived in the country on March 10 of this year from Madrid, Spain.
This Friday, March 20, in the morning, the medical evacuation from Cuba to the U.S. of the U.S. patient previously confirmed from the Covid-19 was completed, presenting good general condition. This patient traveled with his wife in an ambulance plane. This medical evacuation was in response to a request made by the patient and his family, and to the official interest of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba. The Cuban authorities assured the evacuation operation, complying with the corresponding health protocols.
On March 20, four other patients also tested positive, including a Chinese citizen, 52 years old, working in the Special Development Zone of Mariel; a Spanish citizen, 60 years old, and a Cuban citizen, wife of an Italian diagnosed as positive, who was admitted to Las Tunas.
Cuban citizen, 94 years old, resident of the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución, Havana province. The epidemiological study defines her daughter, who arrived in the country on March 7 from Madrid, Spain, as a possible source of infection.
He is a 39-year-old Cuban citizen, resident of the municipality of Consolación del Sur. He arrived in the country on March 8 from Cancun, Mexico.
Cuban citizen, 23 years old, resident of the municipality of Matanzas. He works as an entertainer in a hotel in Varadero and had had contact with three Italian tourists.
Cuban citizen, 18 months old, resident in Spain. He arrived in the country on March 17 from Madrid, accompanied by his mother. He began with symptoms on March 19, and on March 20 they went to his medical office, being taken by the family doctor, to the specialized clinic of the Guillermo González Polanco polyclinic, in the municipality of Guisa, Granma.
Cuban citizen, 19 years old, resident in Spain. She arrived in the country on March 17 from Madrid with her son. On the 20th they both went to the family doctor’s office, being diagnosed as suspects. She is immediately taken by the family doctor to the specialized clinic of the Guillermo González Polanco polyclinic in the municipality of Guisa, province of Granma.
A 27-year-old Cuban citizen, from the municipality of La Sierpe, province of Sancti Spíritus. He arrived on March 6 from Miami.
58-year-old Cuban citizen, from the municipality of Trinidad. She was kept in the Isolation Centre of the Faustino Pérez Rehabilitation Hospital, as she was the contact for one of the confirmed cases.
A 56-year-old Canadian citizen who arrived from Mexico on 9 March. She stayed in a rented house in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución.
A 76-year-old Canadian citizen. He arrived to our country from Mexico on March 10th. He stayed in a rented house in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución.
A 66 year-old Canadian citizen from Mexico arrived on March 14. She stayed in a rented house in the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución.
Out of the 35 patients diagnosed with the disease, 33 remain in the hospital, of which two are reported to be in a critical state and one in a serious condition. A medical team of specialists in intensive care and the Ministry of Public Health’s Expert Group provide ongoing care and follow-up.
The remaining patients show a stable clinical evolution.
