Havana, May 21 (ACN) Hyperimmune plasma therapy is one of Cuba’s bets to face COVID-19, said today Francisco Durán, national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP).
The executive explained in a press conference that up to date 16 blood plasma extractions have been carried out on patients who have recovered from the infectious disease, since the aim is to ensure that their psychological and physical condition is adequate.
He explained that the extraction has always been done 21 days after the patients have recovered, and so far 14 people from Havana and two from Villa Clara have received the benefit of this treatment.
It has been used on patients in serious condition and has received a favorable response, which denotes that Cuba is introducing and innovating with scientific advances, and provinces have already been incorporated into this study, which is done with the consent of the patients offered, he said.
According to the expert, this solution has been used on other occasions in the country, and is based on the idea that the antibodies to fight a certain disease are in the blood, since when it comes into contact with foreign agents the immune system produces antibodies to defend it.
Durán argued that after the disease is over, there is always a level of antibodies left in the blood of those affected, and there are diseases that leave it for life, as is the case with measles.
He added that for the moment, the amount of antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, after suffering the disease has not been clarified, because the time of evolution is very short and it is not yet known if these protect for life or only for a while.
At the press conference held this Thursday, Durán reported eight new positive cases of the coronavirus, for a total of 1,908 in Cuba, and the death of one person. The country is now reporting 80 deaths from COVID-19, compared to 1,603 recovered.
