Santa Clara, Cuba, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) Five hotel entities in this province, in the center of Cuba, were awarded today the National Award for Freedom from Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).

The award, coinciding with the World Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, was given to the lodgings of the Cubanacán Chain, Hotel Central, in Santa Clara, and four facilities of the tourist complex in the city of Remedios: Barcelona, Mascote, Real and Camino del Príncipe.

Master Vivian Martínez, professor of Environment at the Tourism Training Center in Villa Clara, told the press that the distinction is part of a movement that the province has been carrying out for years to ensure that the investment process takes into account these ecological attributes that are international requirements.

The environmental recognition, for preserving the human species, is part of the effective fulfillment of the strategy for the elimination of ODS, through innovative methods, technologies and substances friendly to the natural environment.

This is also the result of the environmental education work that has been developed in the tourism sector, and it is our intention to continue adding hotels to this recognition.

The first hotel in the country to receive the National Environmental Award for a Center Free of Ozone Depleting Substances was Hotel América in Santa Clara.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the 25th anniversary of the creation of the Technical Office for Ozone (OTOZ) in Cuba, which focuses its efforts on the implementation of commitments aimed at reducing and eliminating ODS.
